So, a quick thought:
I don't think I have a single picture from my last (and only) trip to New Orleans. It was only 9 years ago, but I don't think any of us owned a digital camera. I'm guessing we brought the disposable variety down with us, but I don't know of any pictures that were developed (I could be totally wrong about that). Anyway, this year I come armed with an iPhone. It - as any smart phone would - allows me to post to this blog from just about anywhere... pictures, video, text - no problemo. I'm sure that everyone we are meeting up with will have their own digital picture/video capturing device. We will all produce hundreds of digital artifacts. I really wish this technology was in my pocket in 2003.

Burning sensation
It was 9 years ago today (approximately) that the Herms (aka Pukey / Adam) made this same drive, albeit with two other individuals. That was a last-minute decision for me. I called a professor and asked for an extension on a paper that was probably already overdue - for a class I had attended somewhere in the vicinity of 4 times that semester, Bible as Literature, I managed to pass. I also called Cousin Tony to let him know that he and now Cousin-In-Law Liz would not be able to move into our house as planned. We were leaving the next day for NOLA. Cousin Tony was not happy and refused to let me take his license (I was only 20 at the time). What a humbug.
Anyway, drove from the Soo to Flint(ish?) in a Mustang - for no real reason, we had bigger options... then we rented the sweetest car of all time. A 2003(ish) Dodge Stratus. Man that baby hummed all the way to New Orleans. We all made a blood pact to buy Stratuses (Strati?) some day.
Anywho, from what I remember, I had a blast down there.
The Herms and I leave Grand Rapids tomorrow, and plan to drive straight through. Earlier tonight I bought 50 blank CDs and started burning. Adam's Buick (a real beauty) doesn't have an MP3 player so we'll be old-schooling it down there. I'm fine with that. Burning CDs is totally retro... but, not hipster retro. They'd probably think it was lame. Stupid hipsters and their smug, bushy beards.
Anyway, this is what I've burned so far.
- Emir Kustirica (greatest hits)
- Sublime (Sublime)
- Rubblebucket (Rubblebucket)
- White Stripes (De Stihl, White Blood Cells, The White Stripes)
- The White Album
- Babylon Circus (Dances of Resistance)
- Asian Dub Foundation (Rafi)
- Devo (Q-Are we not men?)
- Keller Williams (Grateful Grass w special bonus track - Europe's Final Countdown)
- The Monks (Black Monk Time)
- Gogol Bordello (Voi-La Intruder, Underdog World Strike)
- Dent May & His Magnificent Ukelele
- The Ashleys (I forget the title... not a clever name, I really did forget)
- Koop (Koop Island)
Adam is burning his own lot and we'll play a combination of our tastes on the way down and back. I'm not sure if I'll actually post anything more to this blog while I'm down there... so... I got that going for me.
